Stages 4 & 5

Music Course

This course focuses on skill development and covers a wide variety of musical styles including Rock, Classical, Jazz, Folk and Music of Other Cultures. Students enjoy a wide range of learning experiences in performance, composition, musicianship and listening. It is mandatory in Year 7 and an elective choice in Years 8 to10. The knowledge and skills gained in this course provide the foundation for the Senior Music Course.

Compulsory Performing Arts Music

This course is for the students who are auditioned as musicians – singers and instrumentalists. The course offers an extension program for these students, particularly in the performance strand. This is supported by compositional, listening and musicianship learning experiences. This course well caters for all ability levels and stages of musical development.

Stage 6

Music Course

Separate classes for Music 1 and Music 2 in both Year 11 and 12.

Outstanding HSC results are achieved regularly by Year 12.

Music 1 - Students studying the Music 1 course develop knowledge and skills about the concepts of music and of music as an artform through performance, composition, musicology and aural activities in a variety of cultural and historical contexts, backgrounds and musical interests, including those with an interest in studying popular music.

Music 2 - Music 2 builds on the Year 7 - 10 mandatory and additional study course. It caters for students who have diverse musical focuses on Western Art music. It assumes students have a formal background in music, have developed music literacy skills and have a knowledge of musical styles. Students can pursue areas of specialisation. An extension music course is also offered.

Wollongong High School boasts an extensive extra curriculum music program.  All students who are auditioned in music must participate in one of the core ensembles.  They may also audition for any of the additional performing ensembles.
